Important information on CMS'
new PECOS Requirements
Effective April 5, 2010 CMS requires all physicians who refer medicare beneficiaries for DME equipment - including pumps provided by InfuSystem - to be enrolled in PECOS, the Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System.
This letter from CMS to Physicians briefly explains the program.
According to CMS's PECOS - Getting Started document dated March 23, 2009, "Physicians and non-physician practitioners must enroll and maintain their Medicare enrollment in the Medicare program to be eligible to receive Medicare payments for covered services furnished to Medicare beneficiaries."
Financial Responsibility for Patients
Medicare patients may be held financially responsible for their use of pumps if the referring physician is not enrolled in PECOS. It is extremely important that Credentialing departments enroll all appropriate physicians!
